The art scene takes a rest during the summer lull but there still are options for the art lover to appreciate. For instance, the very interesting group show that is now taking place in Fundación Mundo Nuevo, which is housing an exhibition of works made entirely on or with paper. For several reasons, such as that material’s fragility, the art markets looks down on this type of work. Canvas, wood, hardboard, metal, plastic and many other materials enjoy a better selling status than paper as the recipient of whatever the artist will use to materialize his/her creation. Fundación Nuevo Mundo in now making amends to good old reliable paper with a remarkable exhibition by artists who chose this material in spite of the biased general opinion.
Carlos Ara Monti’s beautiful, ingenious, delicate, virtuosic cutouts would have been impossible on and with any other surface than paper. Nor would Mónica Fierro’s dainty curls. Paper seems ideal for Sergio Artota’s simple, expressive collages. Ignacio Carbonari’s humorous ink drawings could have been made on other material but it is the image that counts and there are plenty of outstanding images in all the works shown. Such as Martín Palottini’s pencil drawings, worthy of Ingres. Julián Bernatene’s beautiful, colorful pastels with which he depicts windswept grass with a tiny touch of an origami bird. Rubén Sassano shows powerful, impressive bridge-like industrial structures made with charcoal on white back ground, while Santiago García Pilotto’s virtuosic drawings, mosaic water colors of cityscapes stun the eye. Quite a refreshing for the dog days.
